I-99 sign alters spelling of 'Bellefonte'

The state Department of Transportation hires plenty of big machines to work on Interstate 99. But it must not have a spell-checker big enough for this new road sign at the Grays Woods interchange in Patton Township.

The sign, shown here on Sunday afternoon at the high-traffic interchange five miles west of State College, wants an "n" as in "banana" in the word Bellefonte, instead of the "h" as in "hippety-hop" that somehow got there.

The unique spelling for the name of the seat of Centre County government was unveiled in time for Penn State's home football game over the weekend.

So Centre County residents got to wonder about it along with folks from the rest of the state. Maybe a few fans from Wisconsin even got something to smile about.

We have a feeling the spelling will be fixed before long.
