Too cold to riot

It'll be too cold for anyone to consider a downtown celebration this weekend, you can be sure.

That's good to know going into the big weekend, as 21 now face charges in the post-Ohio State victory riot.

It's good to see State College police put all of this together, and as we've said the students involved should pay the price.

They're finding there's no place to hide once you're on you tube, having a grand old time destroying public property.

Readers reach out

Since I highlighted one comment today, let me highlight another one that shows how great our readers are. They apparently are responding in a big way to the Project Santa effort to help our troops.

Here's the comment posted with the story:

"We are the Popper in Houtzdale are amazed at the general public who have read this story and contacted us about donating to this cause! The response is wonderful but don't stop we have a long way to go. The Kritzers do not stop at the end of the Christmas Season. They continue to collect all year round to help prepare for the next year."

Reality isn't always rosy

Penn State fans are great, but some of them clearly can't bear to read anything other than rosy stuff about their Nittany Lions.

That made some of them post anger toward retired Ron Bracken and makes them react, even now, to anything close to negative, whether it's accurate or not.

Case in point are some of the comments with this story.

There were some losing seasons, I recall rather well, and some downright bad football, and it wasn't too long ago. The story pointed out well how the seniors on whatever team rose to the occasion for the final game.

But you can see here how some PSU fans can't stand to read about reality.

I know a bunch of them and I get e-mails from some I don't know. Their kool aid is pretty strong stuff, I'd say.

Hat's off to Derrick Williams and the seniors, and let's hope they close this season out with a big win Saturday. A lot is riding on it.

High hopes in hoops

I was among the lonely last night at the Bryce Jordan Center, for a half of basketball at least.

Had to see this team that had lost 34 straight games. How would they come out? How would Penn State handle them?

Well New Jersey Tech scored four essentially wide open threes early and you thought it might be a game, but it wasn't by the second half. The Highlanders went home with loss No. 35.

Penn State is 2-0 with Hartford and New Hampshire next for the Jordan Center faithful. But after that?

Got home to see the final minutes of the Big Ten Network telecast and heard an announcer say that Penn State could be 14-2 by the time it faces the heart of the Big Ten schedule.

Well, that would be nice. But somebody better watch the RPI before getting excited about reaching the tournament.

Can't think any of these early games -- wins or not -- will help Penn State at the end.

PSU football memories

A belated blog thanks to Jeff Brown, who penned our Penn State football memories column that ran on Indiana game day.

Here it is, in case you missed it.

Our series ends this Saturday, and I hope you've enjoyed these as much as I have. This marks six years of Penn State memories columns, and we don't intend to stop here.

If you'd like to write a column for next year just let me know. We'll reach out to Penn Staters next summer for the 2009 writers.

Disgusting comments

It is really unfortunate, and very sad, that every comment section with a story about President-elect Barack Obama includes racist posts.

Every one, and we've been taking them down. Even today's about a college football playoff included four racist posts that were deleted before we had to take down the entire forum.

Anonymity lives here, so perhaps this should be no surprise. But it is disgusting and it soon will end.

We're moving to new comment software in which participants will have to register. Anyone leaving a comment will have a profile and each comment will be tracked to that profile, so you'll see all of that person's comments.

These anonymous fly-bys, which I call them, will end when this is installed.

It'll be good, and it should lead to improved discussions. You sometimes see them on CentreDaily.com when readers keep issues in focus. You'll see them all the time soon.

Innovators and what they do

Perhaps blog readers would be interested in learning about the Associated Press Managing Editors Innovator of the Year finalists and the winner, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

I enjoyed overseeing the annual contest and presenting the finalists at our conference in Vegas, and looking forward to doing it all again in 2009.

Here's our latest APME magazine, with the cover and pages inside devoted to the papers honored for their innovations.

Video milestone

We've just passed 150 local videos, marking a milestone in a new online feature that isn't very old.

Take a look at our local videos page when you have time and enjoy these videos produced by our photographers and reporter Sara Ganim.

The latest, of course, features Penn State-Indiana.

You're invited to submit videos. Just look for directions and if you have any trouble let us know.

Diabetes awareness

We raised the curtain on diabetes awareness and local efforts Sunday, and linked here are the stories and my column.

I feel particularly good about this, because virtually every year I'd hear from a reader or two who want us to shed light on diabetes during November, which is Diabetes Awareness Month. Often, however, there's little or nothing on the wires and we don't have a local story in the works.

This year community members came to us with stories, and I think it made great reading.

Take a look. Perhaps it will help you or your family. More statistics are in Sunday's Centre Daily Times.

Rainbow after rain

For a rain game, it really wasn't bad for fans Saturday. The mild temperatures made it OK, and I have to admit I enjoyed it.

Like rain every once in awhile. And I like snow too, and perhaps we'll sit through it next Saturday.

The Nittany Lions woke up in the second half to beat Indiana, and all they have to do is win. The prospect of Penn State at 10-1 at this point would have generated many arts festival smiles.

Next week's game starts at 3:30, and I'm sure you noticed that we would have had beautiful dry conditions if Saturday's game started then. Can't beat the rainbow that followed the Indiana game.

Hope to see you here next weekend for the battle for the Big Ten title. The Lions have to play much better, and they will. Just wait.
